Pumpkin Pieku

In his official capacity as Poet in Residence of the market, we asked Evan Peterson to bake up something fresh for our pumpkin pie contest. He came, he delivered. He sampled pumpkin pie. And then he led a colorfully costumed parade through the market, tooting on his panflute. We like that in a satyr.

Go here for Lorna Yee’s tasty account of judging the contest. Our thanks to Lorna, Evan, and all the contestants who helped us raise $1,000 for our nonprofit farmers market association.

PUMPKIN PIEKU
by Evan Peterson

I like big pies and
I cannot lie. You other
bakers can’t deny.

More cinnamon! Less
nutmeg! At least we agree
on how much ground clove.

Yes, darling, I know
that graham cracker crust is not
tradition. Calm down.

Vegetative love:
Hello, my pumpkin. Hello,
my fat, orange gourd.
